Hyperthermia Therapy

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the International Congress on Hyperthermia in Clinical Oncology, held May 28-30, 1998, in Venice, Italy, "The concept of using hyperthermia to selectively release toxic drugs from liposomes was first published 20 years ago (Yatvin et al., 1978). At that time, however, liposome formulations were rapidly cleared from systemic circulation and as a consequence tumor targeting was not feasible. Newer formulations with longer circulation times have reinitiated interest in this approach. We previously demonstrated that 42(degree)C heating in vivo will increase the extravasation amount of 100 nm PEG liposomes to tumor by nearly 50-fold,...
