According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the Cellular Targets of Viral Carcinogenesis conference, a special conference in cancer research sponsored by the American Association for Cancer Research, held September 24-28, 1998, in Dana Point, California, "Expression of HPV16 in basal keratinocytes of transgenic mice elicits a multi-stage pathway of epithelial carcinogenesis characterized by progressive stages of hyperplasia, dysplasia, and invasive carcinoma of the epidermis.
