Jury Orders $116 Million Payment from Aetna in Damages

A jury has ordered Aetna U.S. Heath Care of California to pay US$120 million in damages to a woman whose husband fought until his death for coverage of experimental cancer treatment.

The jury awarded the woman $116 million in punitive damages and $4.5 million for medical expenses and loss of companionship in the 1995 death of her husband.

"I think the meaning of this verdict is that people are just plain mad," said Michael Bidart, the woman's attorney. "The health maintenance organizations (HMOs) are corporate executives practicing medicine where profit is the motive, not the best interest of the patients."
