According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the conference Gene Therapy of Cancer VII, held November 19-21, 1998, in San Diego, California, "Introduction: More than 50% of squamous carcinomas of the uterine cervix are associated with human papilloma virus type 16 (HPV-16). Given the viral nature of cervical cancer, cell-mediated immunity is thought to be an important mechanism in protection against the virus and elimination of virus-infected cervical cancer cells.
