According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 40th Annual American Society of Hematology Meeting, held December 4-8, 1998, in Miami Beach, Florida, "Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV, also known as human herpesvirus 8, or HHV8) is a gammaherpes-virus linked to the development of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) and a proportion of Castleman's disease. The KSHV open reading frame K2 encodes viral interleukin-6 (vIL-6) which is structurally homologous to human and murine IL-6.
