According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 90th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research, held April 10-14, 1999, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, "Hepatitis B virus causes chronic liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). HBV encodedxantigen (HBXAg) plays a major role in this process. Since HBXAg is a trans-activating protein, experiments were designed to test the hypothesis that it contributes to HCC formation by altering the patterns of liver cell gene expression.
