According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 90th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research, held April 10-14, 1999, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, "Perturbations of ER signal transduction are thought to contribute to breast tumor progression and eventual development of a hormone-independent and more aggressive phenotype. Recently, ER(beta) gene and a variant of ER(beta) have been identified and the latter was induced by 17(beta)-estradiol in MCF-7 cells. The expression of ER(beta) gene was examined in human breast tumor specimens, breast cancer and ovarian cancer cell lines by RT-PCR and mRNA in situ hybridization.
