Yeast is Better Than Bacteria for Suicide Gene Therapy

The therapeutic outcome of enzyme/prodrug gene therapy for colon cancer is improved when yeast, not bacterial cytosine deaminase (bCD), is used.

E. Kievit and colleagues from the University of Michigan compared yeast cytosine deaminase (yCD) to bCD in a suicide gene therapy protocol ("Superiority of Yeast Over Bacterial Cytosine Deaminase for Enzyme/Prodrug Gene Therapy in Colon Cancer Xenografts," Cancer Research, April 1, 1999;59(7):1417-1421).
