According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 35th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, held May 15-18, 1999, in Atlanta, Georgia, "Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) of genes presumed to be specifically expressed by tumor cells and not by hematological cells has been developed for the detection of minimal residual disease in solid tumors. We performed RT-PCR of cytokeratin 19 (CK19), mucin-1 (Muc-1), and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) genes on normal peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from 47 healthy individuals.
