Tailor-Made Flu Viruses Now Possible

A biotechnology breakthrough revolutionizes vaccine and gene therapy development.

The new technique produces influenza A viruses entirely from cloned complementary DNA (cDNA). It permits custom-designed influenza viruses and virus-like particles (VLPs).

Now it is possible to create live-virus flu vaccines more effective than the cold-adapted vaccines currently in clinical trials. Such vaccines could quickly be made in response to emerging epidemics of dangerous new influenza strains. And the ability to add new genes to customized flu viruses opens a new avenue for the development of vaccines against other diseases.
