Tamoxifen Mechanism of Action Elucidated

Tamoxifen, an estrogen antagonist used against breast cancer, has an inhibitory effect on insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1).

S.M. Corsello, of the Catholic University School of Medicine in Italy, and associates investigated the effect of tamoxifen on the growth hormone-IGF-1 axis. They presented their findings to attendees of the Sixth International Congress on Hormones and Cancer, held September 5-9, 1999 in Jerusalem, Israel. Their study was titled "Tamoxifen Inhibits IGF-1 Serum Levels without Affecting GH Response to GHRH in Women with Breast Cancer."
