Screening Program Shows Women Have Higher Risk

Women are more susceptible to tobacco carcinogens than men, suggests a recent study.

C.I. Henschke and colleagues from Cornell University and New York University Medical Center assessed the relative risk (RR) of lung cancer among high-risk women and men enrolled in the Early Lung Cancer Action Program (ELCAP). ELCAP is an annual CT screening program.

Results from their study were presented at the 65th Annual International Scientific Assembly of the American College of Chest Physicians, held October 31 - November 4, 1999, in Chicago, Illinois.
