Catheterized Patients Require Careful Management

Patients undergoing Hickman-Broviac catheterization require careful monitoring for the development of bloodstream infections, according to a recent report.

Patients frequently experience infectious complications following Hickman-Broviac (H-B) catheter insertion.

S. C. Stamou and colleagues retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 164 children with malignancies who underwent H-B catheter insertion from March 1, 1988 to December 31, 1997 ("Hickman-Broviac catheter-related infections in children with malignancies," Mount Sinai Journal of Medicine, 1999;66(5-6):320-326).
