Increase in Liver Cancer in Egypt due to Hepatitis C Virus

The trend in increasing incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma among patients with chronic liver disease in Egypt is due principally to the hepatitis C virus, researchers report.

"Previous reports have suggested a high seroprevalence of hepatitis C virus infection among Egyptians, which is believed to have been initiated by injections in nationwide antischistosomal mass treatment campaigns 40 years ago," said M. K. Mohamed, Ain Shams University, Egypt, and colleagues in a presentation to the 48th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, held November 28 - December 2, 1999, in Washington, DC.
