Elderly Population Significantly Underrepresented in Cancer Studies

A recent study found that patients who are 65 years of age and older are underrepresented in studies related to cancer treatment and that representation for this population is particularly poor in trials of treatment for breast cancer.

Although studies have addressed the underrepresentation of women and blacks in clinical trials, L.F. Hutchins and colleagues sought to assess the level of participation of elderly patients in such trials. Their findings were published in a recent issue of the New England Journal of Medicine ("Underrepresentation of patients 65 years of age or older in cancer-treatment trials," NEJM, 1999;341(27):2061-2067).
