"The outcome for children with recurrent malignant brain tumors is poor," stated R.J. Packer and colleagues, Children's National Medical Center, Washington, DC. "The majority of patients die of progressive disease within months of relapse, and other therapeutic options are needed."
The researchers explored a herpes simplex virus type 1 thymidine kinase gene (HSV-tk) intravenous ganciclovir (GCV) suicide gene therapy approach to treat this disease in a Phase I clinical trial.
