Older Patients May Benefit From Aggressive Radiation Therapy

Preliminary research suggests that aggressive radiation therapy may be safe and effective in older cancer patients.

"Review of the literature shows that selected patients who have good performance status and fewer comorbid illnesses tolerate radiotherapy as well as younger patients," reported B. Zachariah and colleagues at the University of South Florida ("Radiation therapy of the older patient," Hematology - Oncology Clinics of North America, February 2000;14(1):131+).

Zachariah et al. suggested that radiation therapy may be "of particular benefit to older and frail patients as an alternative to surgery and systemic therapy."
