Attenuated Virus Studied as Cancer Treatment in Phase I Trial

Preliminary results of a Phase I trial conducted by researchers at CRC Beatson Labs in Scotland indicate that a E1B 55 kDa gene-deleted adenovirus, which kills p53-deficient cells, may show promise as an oncologic agent. This attenuated virus has been given the name Onyx-015.

The initial results of this study were reported by I. Ganly et al. in Clinical Cancer Research ("A Phase I study of Onyx-015, an E1B attenuated adenovirus, administered intratumorally to patients with recurrent head and neck cancer," Clin Cancer Res, 2000;6(3):798-806).
