Alpha(1,3)fucosyltransferase Antisense Impairs Colon Cancer Cells

The growth and tumorigenicity of human colon carcinoma cells can be blocked by transfection of alpha(1,3)fucosyltransferase antisense sequences, suggests a study from the United States.

"Sialyl Lewis x and sialyl Lewis a are oncodevelopmental antigens involved in the pathogenesis of colon adenocarcinoma," stated K.M. Hiller and colleagues, University of North Carolina. "Biosynthesis of these glycans is controlled by alpha(1,3/1,4)fucosyltransferases.
