Vector Combines IL-4 and HSV-tk for Glioma Tumor Vaccine

Researchers in the United States constructed a retroviral vector that combined interleukin-4 (IL-4) with the herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase (HSV-tk) gene into a glioma tumor cell vaccine.

"Vaccination with cytokine-transduced tumor cells represents a potentially important approach to the treatment of central nervous system tumors," wrote H. Okada and colleagues. "We have recently demonstrated the therapeutic efficacy of tumor cell vaccines expressing the murine IL-4 and the HSV-tk gene in a rat brain tumor model in which nonirradiated vaccine cells can be eliminated by the subsequent administration of ganciclovir.
