Orthotopic Transplant More Effective than Resection for Hepatocellular Carcinoma Patients with Cirrhosis

Despite some misgivings in the medical community about its use on cirrhotic patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), orthotopic liver transplant (OLT) generally leads to better outcomes than tumor resection, study results suggest.

"Surgical resection has been the treatment of choice for hepatocellular carcinoma, but the resection rate remains low in cirrhotic patients and recurrence is common.
