Providing Nitrous Oxide Lessens Discomfort, May Result in Increased Screenings

A recent study showed that patients who undergo flexible sigmoidoscopy and are given a mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen instead of oxygen alone are less likely to report discomfort during the procedure and more likely to undergo the screening again in the future.

Since flexible sigmoidoscopy is being used more and more to screen patients for various forms of cancer, T.A. Harding and colleagues from New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton, England, conducted a study to determine whether compliance with this procedure might be improved if patients experienced less discomfort.
