Auditory Brain Stem Response Used for Screening

The auditory brain stem response (ABR) has been used to detect small tumors, but recent criticisms have labeled it an insensitive measure, prompting researchers to evaluate its efficacy in small tumor detection.

H.K. Elkashlan and colleagues at the University of Michigan conducted a retrospective review of 25 patients with surgically proven acoustic neuromas (ANs) measuring 1 cm or less to evaluate the use of ABR in the detection of small tumors. The rate of false-positive results was evaluated by reviewing 568 patients who underwent screening.
