Many Cancer Patients Use Complementary, Alternative Therapies to Supplement Primary Treatment

Cancer patients who use or have an interest in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) exhibit active coping behavior with regard to their disease, rather than signs of distress or poor compliance with medical treatment, according to a study featured in the August 15, 2000, issue of Cancer.

The study, conducted by Wolfgang Sollner, MD, of the University of Innsbruck in Austria, and colleagues, reports that progressive cancer and younger patient age also are correlated strongly with the use of or interest in CAM.
