 p53 Gene Mutations Occur Early in AIDS-Associated Disorder

Recent research from the United Kingdom suggests that p53 gene mutations may occur early in AIDS-associated non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL).

"Chromosomal aberrations are a common feature of lymphomas associated with HIV infection," reported A. Reddy and colleagues from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and the University College London Hospital, England. "AIDS-NHL develops in around 5%-10% of HIV infected individuals and involves deregulation of proto-oncogenes such as c-myc, bcl-2, bcl-6, and ras, as well as functional inactivation of tumor suppressor genes, p53 and p16.
