Suicide Gene Therapy Enhanced by Pituitary Specific Replication-Competent Adenovirus

Researchers in the United States found that herpes simplex virus (HSV)-thymidine kinase (TK)/ganciclovir (GCV) suicide gene therapy for pituitary tumors was enhanced by use of a pituitary specific replication-competent adenovirus (Ad).

"We describe a potential therapeutic use for a pituitary specific replication competent adenovirus," stated Eun-Jig Lee and colleagues from Northwestern University, Illinois. "The human growth hormone (GH) promoter sequences (-610, +58) were inserted into adenovirus type 5 DNA so as to drive the E1a gene (AdGHE1a)."
