Suramin Toxicity Reduced by Alternative Mode Delivery

Suramin, a drug that is effective against lipid growth factors, is not often used in cancer treatment regimens because it causes systemic toxicity. One way to get around that toxicity, according to investigators in The Netherlands, is to administer the drug differently.

"In advanced tumors confined to the peritoneal cavity, inhibition of lipid growth factors present in ascites might induce tumor remissions," A.R. Westermann and colleagues at the University of Amsterdam said in the journal Cancer Chemotherapy and Pharmacology.
