Macrophages Important to Tumor Pathology but Don't Predict Future

Although tumor-associated macrophages (TAM) are important in influencing the pathogenesis of prostate cancer tumors, scientists say they cannot find any evidence that TAM are good prognostic indicators, according to a report in the International Journal of Oncology.

"Tumor-associated macrophages influence diverse processes such as angiogenesis, tumor cell proliferation, and metastasis during tumor progression," I.F. Lissbrant et al. said in the report ("Tumor-associated macrophages in human prostate cancer: Relation to clinicopathological variables and survival," Int J Oncol, 2000;17(3):445-451).
