Long-Term Trials Indicate that Smaller Resection Margins Don't Compromise Results

Study results from a multicenter, long-term, randomized trial published in the October 1, 2000, issue of Cancer show that melanoma patients with a tumor thickness of > 0.8 mm and {{<=}} 2.0 mm, treated with a resection margin of 2 cm, experience the same results as patients treated with a resection margin of 5 cm.

"If the extent of surgery can be reduced without compromising the survival of the patient, then both society and the patients will benefit," comment chief researcher Gabriella Cohn-Cedermark, MD, PhD, and colleagues from the Department of Oncology and Pathology at Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden.
