Hemoglobin Levels Can Help Predict Chemoradiation Therapy Outcome

Hemoglobin levels prior to chemoradiation therapy for advanced head and neck cancer provide an accurate prognostic marker of outcome, suggesting a possible adjunct therapy, researchers in Germany report.

"The pretherapeutic hemoglobin level...has been postulated to constitute a prognostic marker for outcome after primary chemoradiation of patients with advanced cancer of the head and neck," wrote Andreas Dietz and colleagues at the University of Heidelberg in the journal HNO. "However, this hypothesis has not been tested systematically in large study samples."
