Tracheal Autotransplantation Can Repair Postoperative Defects

Surgeons can use part of the trachea to preserve larynx function in patients who undergo partial laryngectomy for advanced laryngeal or sinus cancer, researchers report.

P.R. Delaere and colleagues at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium investigated "the use of tracheal autotransplantation for reconstruction of the hemilaryngectomy defect that includes the hemicricoid cartilage and results from resection of laryngeal or hypopharyngeal cancer."
