Mosaic Tumor Blood Vessels Could be New Anti-Cancer Target

For more than 50 years, scientists have reported that cancer cells are located in the walls of so-called "mosaic" tumor blood vessels, which are lined by both normal endothelial cells and tumor cells. The presence of such vessels has implications for metastasis, drug delivery, and antivascular therapy.

In an article published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (December 19, 2000;97(26):14608), researchers from Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital and the University of California, San Francisco, have provided the first quantitative data on mosaic vessels in tumors.
