No Common Cause Linking Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Colorectal Cancer

Research does not support the theory that there might be a single genetic cause for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer.

The causes of IBD and colorectal cancer (which occurs more often in people with IBD) are unknown. Some researchers have suggested that IBD and colorectal cancer might share a common cause and, therefore, relatives of patients with IBD could be at an increased risk of this malignant disease.
