Careful Monitoring Needed Following Surgery To Detect HBV Recurrence

by Sonia Nichols, staff medical writer -- To eliminate the risk of acute hepatic failure after surgery for hepatocellular carcinoma, hepatitis B patients need to be carefully monitored for viral recurrence, researchers in Japan say.

"Although risk factors for acute hepatic failure after liver resection have been reported in patients with chronic liver disease, the issue of reactivation of hepatitis B virus (HBV) is unresolved," the researchers wrote in Annals of Surgery.
