Targeting Cdk Inhibitor Can Lead To Tumor Suppression

by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - Gene transfer to mice with mammary cancer can induce expression of cyclin-dependent kinase (Cdk) inhibitor p21 and lead to tumor suppression, say researchers at the U.S. National Cancer Institute.

"Mammary carcinomas that develop in C3(1)/SV40 T-antigen (TAg) transgenic mice have lost the p53-mediated induction of p21, leading to increased cellular proliferation and significant elevations of cyclins and Cdks," reported Masa-Aki Shibata and colleagues.

Shibata and team developed a retroviral vector to induce p21 in the mice, which led to less cell proliferation, increased cell death in vitro, and suppressed...
