When considering gene therapy for the treatment of cancers, it is desirable to restrict expression of therapeutic genes to relevant tumor cells. M. Miyauchi et al. used a midkine promoter to express herpes simplex virus-thimidine kinase (HSV-TK) in midkine overexpressing tumor cells.
