Globo H Vaccine Shows Promise For High-Risk Patients

by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - Vaccination with the carbohydrate antigen globo H generates immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibody binding to tumor cells in patients with metastatic breast cancer, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center researchers reported.

As a common constituent of breast cancer cells, globo H was considered an ideal vaccine candidate.

"The objectives of this trial were to determine the toxicity and immunogenicity of three synthetic globo H-keyhole limpet hemocyanin conjugates plus the immunologic adjuvant QS-21," reported T. Gilewski and colleagues.
