Aflatoxin Exposure Increases Disease Risk Among Population In Asia

by Sonia Nichols, staff medical writer - New research indicates exposure to the liver toxin aflatoxin is high among some populations in Asia, suggesting a need to limit aflatoxin exposure to reduce risks for liver cancer.

Primary liver cancer, or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), is one of the major causes of disease and death among people in Asia and Africa, according to researchers at Texas Tech University.

"Epidemiological studies have found that dietary exposure to aflatoxin B-1 (AFB(1)) and chronic infection with hepatitis B virus are two major risk factors for HCC," J.S. Wang et al. said.
