Pretreatment Apoptotic Scores Not Of Value For Post-Therapy Prognosis

by Deborah W. Heinrich, staff medical writer - Researchers from Hokkaido University in Japan found no correlation between pretreatment apoptotic scores and a patient's prognosis after radical radiation therapy for the treatment of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

K. Tsuchiya and colleagues rated apoptotic values of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma cells in 48 patients. The apoptotic index (AI) was calculated as the number of apoptotic cells per 1,000 tumor cells and was found to have a linear relationship with the mitotic index (MI) of the cells.
