Downregulation Of TGF-beta RII Is An Early Signal Of Carcinogenesis

by Deborah W. Heinrich, staff medical writer - Researchers at the University of Florence in Italy found that transforming growth factor beta type II receptor (TGF-beta RII) expression is downregulated in pre-malignant lesions that will progress to malignancy.

A. Franchi and colleagues studied TGF-beta RII expression in pre-malignant laryngeal lesions from 15 patients whose lesions progressed to squamous cell carcinoma and 30 patients whose lesions did not progress to malignancy. Their goal was to determine whether alterations in TGF-beta RII expression could be an early indicator of progression to squamous cell carcinoma.
