Telomerase Inhibition Reduces Cell Viability

by Deborah W. Heinrich, PhD, staff medical writer - The recent discovery that antisense telomerase therapy reduces prostate cancer cell viability could offer new treatment hope to men with advanced disease, according to a report from researchers in Germany.

Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein responsible for maintaining chromosomal integrity. It is overexpressed in many tumors and taming telomerase may serve as a widely inclusive treatment for cancer. A. Schindler and colleagues at the Technical University of Dresden, Germany, tried inhibiting telomerase in the context of prostate cancer.
