Elderly Patients Can Benefit From Stem Cell Autotransplants

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Elderly patients suffering from hematological malignancies such as leukemia or lymphomas can be safely and effectively treated with stem cell autotransplantation, researchers in Italy say.

A. Oliveri and colleagues at the University of Ancona and the Civitanova Marche Hospital reported the results of 48 such procedures performed on patients 60 years or older in the journal Bone Marrow Transplantation.

In conjunction with high-dose chemotherapy, peripheral blood progenitor cell (PBPC) autotransplants produced results comparable to those seen in younger patients, they said.
