Genes Involved In PTEN Signaling Pathway Suppress Tumor Growth

by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - Defects in the tumor suppressor gene PTEN have been found in a variety of cancers, and now researchers in Japan have isolated two genes related to PTEN signaling that suppress tumor growth.

"To elucidate the tumor-suppressive function of [PTEN], we have been analyzing expression profiles of cancer cells after introduction of exogenous PTEN," reported M. Unoki and colleagues at the University of Tokyo.

Of 99 candidate genes that were transcriptionally transactivated, the researchers further analyzed of eight of them and found that expression of six - (PINK], EGR2, HCLS1, DUSP1, BPOZ, and NFIL3 - was decreased...
