Blood Transfusion Most Cost-Effective Option For Anemia Treatment

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Blood transfusion is the most cost-effective way to improve hemoglobin levels in cervical cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy, researchers in the United States report.

"Red blood cell (RBC) transfusions or erythropoietin (EPO) can be used to evade the detrimental effects of anemia during radiotherapy, but the economic consequences of selecting either intervention are not well defined," explained Dr. Brian Kavanagh and colleagues at Virginia Commonwealth University.
