Autologous stem cell grafts alter Th1/Th2 balance

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Autologous stem cell transplantation alters the makeup of helper T-cell populations in non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) patients, according to researchers in Japan.

Dr. Masaya Mukai and colleagues at Sapporo City General Hospital studied the effects of autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (auto-PBSCT), the stem cell growth factor granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), and chemotherapy on Th1/Th2 cell balance in patients treated for NHL.

Stem cell grafts ultimately tilted the scales in favor of Th1-type activity, Mukai and coauthors found.
