Antisense Gene Therapy

New RNA treatment inhibits growth of solid tumors

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - Antisense gene therapy blocks tumor growth and angiogenesis in mice implanted with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Similar therapy could be effective for augmenting standard cancer therapies targeting solid tumors, researchers report.

Using current techniques, medical researchers in China at the Fourth Military Medical University have developed gene therapy consisting of antisense RNA to vascular endothelial growth factor (165), one of the growth factor's major isoforms. Initial results indicate it may be a prospective candidate for treating solid tumors that progress largely as a result of angiogenesis.
