Lumpectomy, margin width, and cancer recurrence

The size of the margin width excised during lumpectomy and the tumor size in the margin are the most significant factors in predicting whether or not tumor cells remain in the breast tissue after lumpectomy.

Findings in a recent study published in the April 1, 2002, issue of Cancer indicate that the greater the margin of grossly normal breast tissue removed during lumpectomy and the smaller the lesion in the excised margin, the less chance there is of residual tumor being left in the breast. The study also suggests that women with a low likelihood of residual disease may be able to forego postoperative radiation with a low risk of recurrence.
