Dramatic increase in cancer burden predicted as U.S. population ages

According to the latest "Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer" - a yearly update on cancer occurrence and trends in the U.S.- cancer death rates decreased from 1993 to 1999, and cancer incidence rates stabilized after 1995.

At current incidence rates, however, the number of newly diagnosed cancer cases can be expected to double by 2050 due to the projected growth and aging of the population. This report is published in the May 15, 2002 issue of Cancer, the official interdisciplinary international publication of the American Cancer Society.
