Flavopiridol an angiogenic modulator in tumors affecting children

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - The enzyme inhibitor flavopiridol can arrest angiogenesis in human neuroblastoma, researchers at the Giannina Gaslini Institute in Genoa, Italy have determined.

"Human neuroblastoma tumors elaborate angiogenic peptides, and enhanced angiogenesis correlates with their aggressive behavior, metastatic spread, and poor clinical outcome," Annamaria Rapella and colleagues explained in the International Journal of Cancer.

Their evaluation of advanced-stage human neuroblastoma cell lines began with demonstrating that both hypoxia and picolinic acid are major stimuli for production of the angiogenesis modulator...
