Gene alteration may render some prostate cancers less responsive to radiation therapy

Identifying the status of the p53 gene product in certain prostate cancer patients could help in determining the best treatment, according to a new study published in the July 2002 issue of the International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology and Physics.

Researchers set out to explore the cause of treatment failures following radiation therapy in some prostate cancer patients. Focusing in on the p53 gene, they hypothesized that the active or inactive state of the gene product may play a role in whether the cancer is successfully treated by radiation.
